This is also when the Protege MP3 premiered, showing off 17" Racing Hart wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, and a cat-back exhaust system. 2001 welcomed in an update, as the Mazda Protege parts were given an edgier, more aero-enthused exterior style, a stiffened suspension, and an upgraded premium audio system were also added to the model. All-wheel drive could also be had as an option. An inline four-cylinder engine was still the source of power, and like before, paired to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Five-door wagon models were known as the Protege5 in North America, but the body-styles offered from the previous generation were made available once again, as well. The third generation (and ninth overall) of the Mazda Protege rolled off the line in mid-1998 for the 1999 model year. However, a full redesign of Protege parts would not be ordered until the close of the decade. For this generation, the Protege also featured an increase of smooth lines for the exterior parts, which gave off a more aerodynamic shape than previous years. While the vehicle wasn't known for its horsepower, it did begin to establish itself as a reasonably-performing model for its class. In the US, the four-door sedan was the main exported version and was outfitted with an inline four-cylinder engine directed through either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. There really wasn't too much of a change in direction for the model, as it was still offered as a hatchback and sedan. Second-generations of the Mazda Protege started making their way onto US dealer lots during the 1994 model year. Offered as both a hatchback and sedan, the Mazda Protégé sported a front-engine, front-wheel drive layout with an inline four-cylinder motor mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. In fact, this car did not become known as the Protege until the late 1980s. Throughout the '70s, Mazda gave the model an assortment of inline four-cylinder engines while the name of the vehicle evolved from the 1000 to the 12 before being labeled as the 808, Mizer, and later, the GLC. It kept a reputation as an economical, fashionable choice for younger car buyers, although the car's demographic stretched across various age groups. Car is now in Nevada away from salt.The Mazda Protege is a compact sedan that got its start in the 1969s as the 800 (and 1000, respectively) before becoming dubbed the Familia. The exhaust rusted apart just after the downpipe so it's a little loud but fixing that means a full exhaust replacement. There is now a hole in the back seat floorboard from rust and the seat belt mechanism broke - replaced with junk yard piece. Still runs great, which means in over 155k miles it has never had a mechanical problem. 16 years later, it's now the teenager's car. ![]() Repaired the hood and front-end plastics myself summer 2019. Hopefully it doesn't cost too much because this car still has LOTS of useful life in it. I have not had an estimate for repairs yet, but the hood is crumpled, the grille is gone and headlights smashed, but the fenders seem OK. Shortly after 150,000, my son rear-ended another car. It runs perfectly - if it wasn't for rust, it would look and work very much like new. ![]() Both passenger side electric locks no longer work. Still no mechanical problems or break-downs. Rust wreaks havoc on these cars, though not as bad as some other cars. The timing belt et al has been changed and the car continues to run great. The worst thing on it by far … is the rust in the rear fender wells.Īfter 105,000 miles, everything else still works great.Īt 150,000, I've replaced the right rear strut because it rusted apart. The passenger side electric door lock stopped working at about 50,000 miles. The sway bar bushings wore out at 85,000 miles and the tubing to the mass air flow sensor cracked, but a redneck duct tape fix still works. It's been a great car, extremely reliable and is still fun to drive. I bought my 2003 Protege ES new based on handling and ride - and looks. ![]()
